Spotlight On: Work Vessels for Vets Awardee SFC Benjamin Hernandez

This month, Fortunato Construction Group welcomes SFC Benjamin Hernandez as an Army-supported apprentice. SFC Hernandez is a Work Vessels for Veterans awardee who connected with Fortunato Construction through the Greens for Good Golf Tournament. As he retires from active duty this spring, he is focused on growing his Enfield-based construction firm Benny Blanco Decking Company.

What is your background in the Military?

My last assignment (last 7 years), I was the non-Commissioned Officer in charge of Army Military Funeral Honors for the state of Massachusetts. My team provided honors to over 4,000 Veterans annually.

How long have you been working on construction projects?

I renovated my entire home in 2003. I added a patio a few years later because having an entertainment space at home is really important to me. When I purchased my second home, I took on the challenge of building a deck. I watched the same instructional 4-hour video on YouTube countless times for several months. When I built my 12’x28’ deck, it felt as if I had done that before…really enjoyable experience.

What’s your favorite part of a project?

I’ve always enjoyed being outside building decks for family and friends. I would say framing is my favorite part of the job, there’s something about starting with a clean canvas, and in two days have an entire deck framed, everything is perfectly square. I’m a nerd when it comes to carpentry.

What made you choose to work with Fortunato?

While talking to Pete Drane I mentioned to him that I would love to be an apprentice at a successful construction company, so I can learn how to efficiently run my business. He quickly introduced me to Vince and Lindsey Fortunato and they both welcomed me with open arms. Also, seeing everyone’s interactions with one another, every single person at Greens for Good seemed to be genuinely happy to work for this organization.

How did you hear about WVFV?

I was emailed a list of organizations that help Veterans kick start their business via tools and/or educational programs. I submitted my request for assistance with WVFV and could not be happier. They far exceeded my expectations; they got me a brand-new enclosed trailer as well as some tools. Prior to that I would transport my tools in an open trailer. My tools got rained on several times, and I did not have a way of securing my tools at job sites.

What’s next?

Since I started this company in 2020, we’ve built 10-15 decks per year and several concrete patios. We’ve also done interior renovations like finishing basements, and renovating kitchens and bathrooms. We’ve handled flooring, cabinetry, countertops, and window installation. I’m currently working on a complete renovation of a two-family house in Holyoke, MA. Looking forward, I’m expanding my services to include residential and commercial clients in Western/Central Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut.
